A video recording is now available of the world premiere of the new opera by Wolfgang Reim, one of Germany’s leading contemporary composers. Based on Nietzsche’s “Hymn to Dionysus,” “Dionysus” depicts the protagonist N—modeled after Nietzsche himself—and his yearning for and conflict with all things “Dionysian.” While the subject matter is quite complex due to its basis in Nietzsche’s work, the production is crafted in such a way that it can be enjoyed even without deep philosophical reflection. Johannes Martin Krenzl, who plays N, is a baritone born in Augsburg, Germany, in 1962. He has a wide-ranging repertoire and has been particularly active in Wagnerian roles in recent years. Monika Erdmann is a soprano who enjoys great popularity today. She effortlessly masters this extremely demanding role, which requires frequent high notes. Erin Lombo is a Swedish soprano. She received high praise for her performance in Reim’s *Toward the Great Sun Filled with Love* at the 2009 Salzburg Festival and is returning to the stage for this production. Matthias Klink, who plays “The Guest” and Apollo, is a German tenor currently at the height of his career. Based primarily in Cologne and Stuttgart, he is a versatile artist with a broad repertoire. The key figure behind the success of the premiere was, without a doubt, Ingo Metzmacher. His clear and meticulously organized conducting was highly praised. Pierre Audi’s accessible staging and Jonathan Mese’s imaginative set design were also outstanding.
