Based on a 13th-century manuscript from the Benedictine Abbey of Beuel, this work sees Orff transforming the unrestrained, anti-authoritarian poetry of wandering students and rebellious clergy into a grand stage cantata. From the iconic opening movement, “O Fortuna,” through the frenzied outdoor dance, tavern scenes, and interludes depicting courtly love, primal rhythms and vivid orchestration shine relentlessly. With the choir, percussion, two pianos, and celesta playing prominent roles to create a powerful sonic world, this is one of the 20th century’s most distinctive masterpieces. Combining the excitement of a live performance with PENTATONE’s superb recording, this is an exceptionally rewarding listen. Recording “Carmina Burana” live with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) was an unforgettable experience.
