Here is a scene from a rehearsal of Bruckner’s heavenly Adagio—the third movement of Symphony No. 9—conducted by Cherubini. When we listen to Cherubini’s performances today on CD or other media, we must keep in mind that what we’re hearing is a “finished product.” When listening to his music, all we need to do is simply let ourselves be carried away by the beautiful sound. But how many people realize just how much time Cherubini spent—adjusting the timbre and dynamics, and repeatedly conveying the composer’s intentions to the orchestra members—before he finally created the music that made him exclaim, “This is it!”? The sight of him repeating the same measure over and over again, refining the sound until he is satisfied, is that of a true seeker. That said, even this demanding conductor sometimes addresses his musicians with humor. “What’s so funny?” In that instant, the tense atmosphere suddenly softens. Filmmaker J. Schmidt-Galle captures these gentle moments with remarkable precision. In the latter half of the film, when Cherubini visits St. Florian’s Abbey—a sacred site for Bruckner—his murmured reflections on Bruckner’s music are deeply moving. And as the long, long rehearsal draws to a close—just as the final notes of the Adagio fade away—this moving film concludes with Cherubini’s words: “All right, let’s start again from the first movement!” Naxos Japan
