The record is a time capsule of 2021 and at the same time a look back over decades of composing and practising. This is my piano, the instrument on which most of these pieces were written. And it is the room in which I have worked for decades, amid the energy that the city of New York itself has given me. As far as possible, I made this record to invite the listener in." Philip Glass, November 2023 Philip Glass's Solo was recorded at a moment when the world was undergoing a profound change. Moving from a crowded schedule of touring and premieres to time spent at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, Glass used those months to revisit some of his most highly regarded piano works from a fresh perspective in his New York home studio. A snapshot of his life, it is his most personal document to date, offering a portrait of eighty years of daily practice through a handful of pieces close to his heart. Solo opens with "Opening", written for the 1982 album Glassworks - one of Glass's most beguiling works, which quickly established the sound that became his calling card. It is followed by Metamorphosis I, II, III and V, a series of pieces that Glass first arranged for solo piano concerts during the 1980s. "Mad Rush" is one of his best-loved works and receives its longest performance on record here (16'35"); it was written as an organ piece in 1978, the year the Dalai Lama gave his first address in New York. The programme closes with a reworked version of "Truman Sleeps" from the soundtrack to the popular 1990s film The Truman Show. (Translated from the manufacturer's website / Tower Records)
