Master Conductor Karl Ränkl’s Performance of Mahler’s “Symphony No. 4”! Austrian conductor Karl Ränkl (1898–1968) was a student of Schoenberg and Webern and is also known for having served as Kleiber’s assistant. He fled to England to escape the ravages of World War II, where he served as principal conductor of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and music director of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. After the war, he returned to his homeland of Vienna, and this live recording captures his performance with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra at the Musikverein on January 23, 1954. This recording of works by Mahler and Dukas was made by Rot-Weiß-Rot Radio—the predecessor of ORF—as broadcast material. This reissue from a rare tape discovered about ten years ago captures Karl Rankl’s masterful artistry. Tokyo M-Plus
