UPPERWILDS, a Brooklyn-based noise-rock trio. Formed around guitarist and vocalist DAN FRIEL—an original member of PARTS & LABOR, which spearheaded the DIY scene of the 2000s—the trio also features bassist JASON BINNICK and drummer JEFF OTTENBACHER. Known for their approach of clashing heavy riffs—in the tradition of Husker Du and Black Sabbath—with catchy melodies, they have fused the vastness of space with the aesthetics of noise-pop through their 2018 album *MARS*, their 2021 album *VENUS*, *JUPITER* (2023)—a series of planet-themed albums that fuse the vastness of the cosmos with the aesthetics of noise-pop. Three years after their previous release, this 2026 album is named after Mercury, the planet closest to the Sun. Created against the backdrop of DANFRIEL’s personal experience with skin cancer surgery, as well as the crises of modern society—such as climate change and capitalism—the album explores the fragility of life and death. Recorded in a Brooklyn studio with engineer TRAVISHARRISON, who has worked with bands like GUIDEDBYVOICES. Featuring guest appearances by long-time collaborator JEFF TOBIAS, the saxophonist from SUNWATCHERS, and ERIN DAWSON, the vocalist of the experimental black metal band GENITAL SHAME from LA, the album has culminated in the band’s fastest and most explosively energetic release to date. The album features the guitar-driven title track “MERCURY,” which incorporates samples of NASA’s solar wind; the high-speed track “FEVER,” where ERINDAWSON’s screams explode; “DEATHSONG#3,” driven by JASON BINNICK’s dynamic bassline; and “REAPER,” where JEFF TOBIAS’s EWI (Electronic Wind Instrument) stokes the frenzy—these are just some of the 10 tracks bursting with a sense of urgency. Roaring fuzz guitars and machine-gun-like drums fill the space, overwhelming the listener. An overwhelming vitality that confronts the fear of death while transforming it into ecstatic noise. This is a masterful work that pushes the boundaries of noise rock.
