This is the sixth collection of piano sonatas by Bohemian composer Leopold Kogelf (1747-1818). The four sonatas here were written between 1785 and 1786. Among the early sonatas written for fortepiano, his 50 or so works are outstanding and serve as a bridge between Haydn, Beethoven, and Schubert. The works show the influence of Mozart, who was popular at the time, in many places, but also Kogelf's originality, such as the passage in Sonata No. 22 that foreshadows Mozart's B-flat major Sonata K570, which was written later. Performed by New Zealand pianist Kemp English, a familiar face in this series. 2012 recording. (C)RS
