Over the course of his career, Tom Harrell has left his mark on a wide range of styles, including bebop, rhythmic Afro-Cuban jazz, and well-researched classical compositional techniques, as well as pleasant smooth jazz. In the five decades he has been a leader, he has released more than 30 albums, all of which, like "Oak Tree," feature Harrell's own original compositions. At the time this album was recorded, Harrell was in his mid-70s and in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite the circumstances, Harrell behaved like a young radical and continued to manipulate the trumpet with fresh themes. I like to work with people who have their own styles but work well as a unit," Harrell said. Luis Perdomo on piano is a great improviser and a consummate musician. He has great solos on this album and his accompaniment is perfect. Ugonna Okeguo is one of the most unique bass players I can think of, and he is not at all clichéd. He always helps me find my groove.Drummer Adam Cruz has the best Latin perspective and incredible chops, but he also does deep swing, and all three are innovative yet great people to hang out with. The recording went very smoothly and everyone was happy to play along. "Each of the 11 songs is kept to a five- to seven-minute length to keep you on your toes. The quartet-performed album "Oak Tree" is impressive for its beautiful harmonies and smooth improvised playing, and somehow it feels comforting and familiar. Keep an eye out for Tom Harrell.
