This is the first duo recording by Marilyn Crispel and Anders Jormin, showcasing their lyrical and delicate musicality.
Although the two have been collaborating for many years, this marks their first recording as a duo. On ECM, American pianist Krispel previously contributed to Jormin’s album *In Winds, In Light* (2004), and she cites this Swedish bassist as a figure who has influenced her musical thinking.
“When I heard Anders play, I felt a resonance that struck a deep chord within me,” Krispel comments.
The album opens with a powerful series of duo improvisations that are deeply attuned to the space, before transitioning into compositions by each musician. “Three Shades of a House” is a piece Jormin first performed on his collaboration with Bobo Stenson, *Contralaindecision*, and here it is presented as variations on “Morning” and “Evening.” The former is an exploration of a crystalline theme that brings Krispel to the forefront, while the latter is a meditation driven by a dark-toned bass. Krispel’s “Newquay Beach” sketches the Cornish coastline, with Jormin’s high-register bowed bass evoking the cries of seagulls. The album concludes with “Dragonfly,” a tribute to Gary Peacock. Throughout the album, the musicians respond to the delicate, detailed acoustics of the Auditorium Stelio Moro RSI in Lugano; the album was produced by Manfred Eicher in July 2025.
