Continuing the exploration begun in Warp (2016) and Discourses (2020), this is Norwegian pianist Jon Balke's first new solo piano work in four years. From the very first notes of this work, he proposes a new dimension of sound, and "Skrifum" (Icelandic for "writing") goes a step further. With the help of Spektrafon, an electroacoustic tool he helped develop, Balke is now able to manipulate ambient sounds directly from the piano while playing. This activated reverberation becomes new material for improvisational dialogue, often with very beautiful results. Spektrafon's sound feeds back in a way that demands space. I take advantage of that opportunity to play almost monophonically, concentrating on each individual sound and its place in the soundscape," commented Balke. Recorded in November 2023 at Village Recording in Copenhagen, the album was edited and mastered at the Bavarian Music Studios in Munich.
