Lonnie Smith

Description:

Now 78 years old, Dr. Lonnie Smith—a legend of the Hammond B-3 organ whose music has been sampled in numerous tracks across genres such as hip-hop and R&B, and who has released over 30 albums as a bandleader—presents his third album since returning to Blue Note. This album features six tracks from a live performance Smith gave in 2017 at the Jazz Standard, a famous jazz club in Manhattan, New York, to celebrate his 75th birthday. Smith, who values live performance above all else and believes that “the place of creation is not the studio, but the live stage,” selected these tracks from that show. While the 2018 album *All In My Mind* was released from that same performance, this album features tracks that he was determined to preserve as part of his discography. All tracks were produced by Don Was, president of Blue Note. While the album centers on Smith’s original compositions, it also includes covers of Thelonious Monk and others. Additionally, the first and eighth tracks feature studio recordings with Iggy Pop as a guest artist. This collaboration came about when Iggy Pop happened to walk in while Smith was performing at an art garage in Florida and invited him to join him, saying, “I want to play with you!” The album concludes with a funk-style arrangement of Donovan’s 1965 hit “Sunshine Superman.” [Personnel] Dr. Lonnie Smith (Hammond B3), Jonathan Kreisberg (g), Johnathan Blake (ds), John Ellis (ts), Jason Marshall (bs), Sean Jones (tp), Robin Eubanks (tb), Alicia Olatuja (vo), Iggy Pop (vo) Recorded at Jazz Standard, New York, 2017 (Tracks 2–7)
