Description:

A Collection of British Music Reflecting the International Styles of the Georgian Era [Overview] ◆ A Collection of Works by British Baroque Composers and Their Students This 4-CD set features works by Maurice Green, a court musician of the Georgian (Hanoverian) era, and his student, William Boyce. ◆ A Richly International Style London, Europe’s largest city and a center of economic prosperity, attracted many musicians from various countries, leading to the flourishing of its courts and theaters. The compositional styles of the musicians active there reflect influences from Italy, France, and England, and—as befits the late Baroque period—the sound is particularly rich and full. ◆ German-Style Harpsichord Fernando de Luca uses a harpsichord (pitch: A=415 Hz) built in 2007 based on an instrument by Christian Fater, an 18th-century harpsichord maker from the Electorate of Hanover; this choice is believed to be influenced by the historical context described below. ◆The Stuart Lineage Was Extinguished in England The House of George began when the Stuart line—which had become extinct in England due to the exclusion (exile) of Catholic royalty—was inherited by George Ludwig, Elector of Hanover, a Protestant principality within the Holy Roman Empire. ◆Serving as Monarch of Both Nations At that time, the Electorate of Hanover covered an area of approximately 18,000 km² and had a population of about 500,000 (with the capital, Hanover, having a population of about 10,000). The Kingdom of Great Britain covered an area of approximately 230,000 km² and a population of about 7 million (with the capital, London, having a population of about 630,000). Given these proportions, it was only natural that Britain would take precedence even though he held the dual role of monarch of both countries; however, George I and George II made numerous visits to the court in their homeland of Hanover, and George III, who was born in London, was also able to read and write German. ◆George II and George III Maurice Green served as “King’s Music Master (≈ Court Kapellmeister)” for approximately 20 years, from 1735 to 1755, serving only King George II (reign: 1727–1760 / approximately 33 years). William Boyce’s tenure effectively spanned approximately 24 years, from 1755 to 1779; thus, he served King George II for about 5 years and King George III (reign: 1760–1820 / approximately 59 years) for about 19 years.
