Sabine Deuvier is the title role in Stravinsky's opera (lyric) The Nightingale. François-Xavier Lhoto conducts a group of first-rate French singers, the chorus of Ensemble Edes, and his period instrument orchestra, Les Siecle, in a stunning new interpretation that brings out all the charm of the score. Based on a story by Hans Christian Andersen, "The Nightingale," first performed in Paris in 1914, features such characters as the nightingale, the fisherman, the Chinese emperor, the mechanical nightingale, and the shadow of death. This recording is from the March 2023 production at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, directed by Olivier Pi. Le Figaro declared, "Sabine Deuvier will be unforgettable as the bewilderingly sensual nightingale," and praised the rest of the illustrious cast and François-Xavier Lot's sense of color in the score.Opera Magazine said, "Sabine Deuvielle handled Stravinsky's demand for crystal clear high notes and birdlike technique with aplomb," and that "Lucille Richarde was intense and poetic as the Grim Reaper, Cyril Dubois sang beautifully as the fisherman, and Roland Naouri was dignified as the squire.
