A legendary performance of Schubert’s monumental work for wind and strings by leading Viennese musicians—including the Vienna String Quartet, Schmiedl, and Turkovich—at the Musikverein. A live recording from the Brahms Hall of the Vienna Musikverein. Completed in Vienna in 1824, Schubert’s “Octet” was composed with Beethoven’s Septet in mind; consequently, although there are some minor differences in the number of movements, their order, tonal relationships, and instrumentation, it bears a striking resemblance to Beethoven’s work. However, the music is brimming with Schubert’s signature song-like quality, rich in romantic lyricism and joy—qualities that elevate this work to a form of pure, refined chamber music unique to Schubert. It is the Viennese musicians, who know Schubert inside and out, who fully bring out these characteristics of the work and allow listeners to fully savor its charm. On this album, the strings of the Vienna String Quartet—composed of members of the Vienna Philharmonic—are joined by Schmidl, Hägner, and Zagat—all members of the Vienna Philharmonic—along with Turkovič, a former member of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. It features a live recording of a concert held at the Brahmssaal of the Vienna Musikverein, performed by a truly Viennese ensemble. One could hardly hope for a more ideal performance of this piece.
