Description:
Stanislaw Moneuszko is also known as the "father of Polish opera" for his works such as "Halka" (CD: 8.660485-86) and "The Ghost House. This "Pariah" is the last opera he completed, a tragedy set in South India about people struggling against absurd class discrimination. Idamor, born into the lowest caste, abandons his home and family to make a new life for himself, and assumes the identity of a different person to become a strong warrior. For his fighting exploits, he is allowed to marry Neela, the daughter of the priest Akeval. Idamor's father, Jares, appears in the village amidst the celebratory mood. He had once been banished for the grave sin of defiling a sacred place by breaking caste laws and trespassing in the forest. Acebal sentences Jareth to death, but when Idamor comes forward claiming to be Jareth's son, he is killed by the outraged people. Neela realizes that her love for Idamor was true, declares herself Jares' daughter, and leaves the village in exile. Although the play was not well received at the time of its premiere, perhaps because of its gruesome ending, the theme of tragedy brought about by an absurd social system has a strong appeal in today's world.Under the direction of conductor Jacek Kaspsik, the singers will give their fullest performance.
