Born in Berlin, Foss received his early musical education locally and went to Paris in 1933. He then moved to the United States in 1937 to attend the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he studied conducting with Fritz Reiner and composition with Paul Hindemith at Yale University. His works are a mixture of compositional styles, but his three works from the 1940s are written in a neoclassical style, embodying his own words, "To step large into the future, one must step large into the past. The Symphony No. 1 in particular is a unique work with a lyrical, rural atmosphere and subtle jazz influences. The "Ode" is a memorial to the lives lost during World War II. Three American Pieces was originally written for violin and piano, but was later arranged for orchestral accompaniment. The "Renaissance Concerto" from 1985 is what Foss called "a handshake across the centuries. The piece borrows from works by Rameau and Monteverdi, but has an appealing modern tone with clever modulations.Listen to the expressive conductor Joan Falletta. Naxos Japan
