David Helbock, originally from Austria, has already released four CDs on ACT and is attracting worldwide attention as an outstanding jazz pianist. Meanwhile, French rising star Camille Bertault is a much-talked-about jazz singer who gained attention with a video of her performing Coltrane’s “Giant Steps” posted on Facebook and YouTube, and made her debut with “EnVie” (SSC1438) on Sunnyside. The two have performed together repeatedly at music and jazz festivals, recognizing each other’s musical talents. The album title, “Playground,” reflects a content where their talents, techniques, and ideas fly back and forth freely, as if they have fully explored the possibilities of their duo. The album opens with “Frevo,” a number by Egberto Gismonti. It’s a track brimming with intellectual playfulness—complete with effects and sampling—that perfectly captures the duo’s style. “Lonely Supamen” features Bertol’s outstanding scat singing. "New World" is a grand, meticulously crafted track based on a Björk song from the film "Dancer in the Dark," featuring extensive use of overdubs. And closing the album is "Para Hermeto," written by Herboeck as a tribute to Brazilian composer Hermeto Pascoal. This album truly offers the ultimate "playground." The liner notes for the Japanese edition were written by guitarist and composer Shuya Morishita.
