This recording captures the concert held on January 7, 1967, at the Moscow Conservatory (conducted by Barbirolli) as part of the BBC Symphony Orchestra’s 1967 tour of Prague, Leningrad, and Moscow with John Barbirolli and Pierre Boulez. While the Elgar Cello Concerto that Jacqueline du Pré—who had been studying under Rostropovich since 1966—performed for the citizens of Moscow had previously been released on CD, the entire concert—from the opening Soviet national anthem and the British national anthem, through the symphonies by Haydn and Sibelius, the thunderous applause, and even a bonus track featuring rehearsal footage—this marks the first-ever release of the entire concert.
