Description:

The 9th collection of the highly popular "Music of Wartime" series! The symphony by Mosolov, famous for "The Iron Works"! The follow-up to the popular "Music of Wartime in Russia" series is the symphonic episode "The Iron Works" by the Russian avant-garde composer Mosolov. Although Mosolov's avant-garde style took the world by storm in his early years, the Soviet authorities soon turned against him and he was forced to turn his back. He was finally sent to forced labor for the construction of a canal, but he barely managed to return to composing thanks to the efforts of his teachers, Glière and Miaszkowski. These works were composed after his return, but the music is so energetic and dramatic, based on Russian folk songs, that it is hard to believe that his health was seriously impaired by the forced labor. From the opening of the first movement of the Cello Concerto No. 2, entitled Elegy, the cello's sobbing solo, led by a tragic orchestral prelude, is it Mosolov's bitterness or despair for life? The second movement is full of plaintive and joyful melodies similar to "Song of the Forest," and the final movement is a spectacular march to victory. The symphony's heavy and solemn opening gives one goosebumps. The first three movements of the four-movement symphony are largo, which is also unusual, but the waves of tragedy come and go, and just when the listener's patience is at its end, the final movement comes in with a full-blown explosion of power. Even if the authorities had intended to create a work that would raise wartime war spirits and exude patriotic sentiment, this is still a masterpiece. The final section is an adrenaline-fueled romp with brass and percussion. The climax of the piece is reminiscent of Shostakovich's Seventh, which is enjoyable.
