Doric String Quartet
Description:
The British Doric String Quartet began its activities in 1998. Since winning the 2008 Osaka International Chamber Music Competition, the quartet has enjoyed great popularity in Japan and has captivated audiences worldwide with its profound and sincere interpretations ranging from Classical to contemporary music. To mark their 25th anniversary, they have embarked on a complete recording of Beethoven’s string quartets, aiming to complete the project in 2027—the 200th anniversary of the composer’s death. This third volume is structured to provide an overview of the composer’s creative journey, featuring works from his early, middle, and late periods. Although they use a classical-style bow only for Op. 18, their approach is bold and energetic. Cellist Myerskov describes Op. 18 as “extremely classical and refined, yet at the same time featuring the bold and daring devices unique to Beethoven”—“Haydn with a turbocharger, so to speak.” The symphonic and energetic approach to No. 9, the subtlety of No. 10, and in the final two string quartets of Beethoven’s oeuvre, the Doric String Quartet delivers performances that are befitting the profound depth of these works, while relentlessly emphasizing sudden shifts in musical ideas and dissonances, yet retaining grandeur and lyricism. The Doric String Quartet underwent a major lineup change in 2024, and this album marks the first recording by the current members. New first violinist Maia Cabeza serves as concertmaster of the Aurora Orchestra and principal second violinist of the European Chamber Orchestra, and she also participated in the period-instrument ensemble “Sputniknife” for their recording of Mozart’s String Quintet Complete Recordings (ALPHA1137). Another new member, violist Emma Vernig, is a young musician born in 1999 who won the 2017 Cecil Aronovitz International Competition and and has served as a principal player with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra; her eloquent and ambitious playing further enhances the Doric String Quartet’s approach to Beethoven’s works.
