An album featuring violinist Elena Yurioste and pianist Tom Poster—who met through the BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists Scheme—that brings together hidden masterpieces from France and Belgium dating from 1892 to 1932. The influence of César Franck serves as a common thread running through these works. Franck taught Lecou and Bonis; Bonis taught Soï (Sohe); and Soï’s teacher, Dandy, was an ardent admirer of Franck. Here, the duo has deliberately set aside Franck’s sonata—which could be considered a standard repertoire piece—and instead centered the album around the sonata by the Belgian composer Lecou, a work rarely performed. Particularly captivating is the contrast between Saint-Saëns’s Elegy in F major and Messiaen’s *Theme and Variations*. Although only 12 years separate the composition dates of these two works, they present entirely different musical landscapes that seem to reflect the dramatic upheavals of the era. The album concludes with a deeply moving finale: a nocturne by Barène, who was also a friend of Messiaen’s. Naxos Japan
