Description:

[A Glimpse into Another Side of Modern French Music Through a Little-Known Masterpiece Opera] Charles Silvé was a French composer of the same generation as Dukas, Satie, and Roussel; his opera *The Sleeping Beauty* premiered in 1902, the same year as Debussy’s *Pelléas et Mélisande*. Born in Paris to a Russian merchant, Silvé studied under T. Dubois and Massenet. Believing in his exceptional musical talent, he naturalized as a French citizen to enter the Prix de Rome competition, winning the grand prize in 1891 for his cantata *L'Interdit* (The Forbidden). In 1900, he married the coloratura soprano Georgette Bréjean, who had gained popularity in Bordeaux and Paris. He adapted the story of “Sleeping Beauty” into an opera with her in mind for the lead role and managed to stage the premiere at the Marseille Opera House. Although the production was met with rave reviews—particularly for his wife’s voice, which was perfectly suited to the role—the success was short-lived. With the outbreak of World War I before the opera could be performed in Paris, this masterpiece sank into oblivion. The research team at the Palazzetto Bruzane Center for Romantic French Music had been waiting for an opportunity to revive this legendary masterpiece. Now, Hungarian conductor György Vashezi—who has recently succeeded in recording complete works such as Lalo’s *Le Roi d’Ys* and the baritone version of Massenet’s *Werther*—interprets it with meticulous conducting. At a time when Debussy and the post-Franck generation were exploring avant-garde styles, Silvé’s solid compositional technique—which thoroughly embodied the French aesthetic qualities of the Massenet lineage and the careful musicalization of poetic text—demonstrates just how well-suited and effective it was for stage music. As is customary with the BruZane label, the booklet is packed with photographs and articles (in French and English). Naxos Japan
