Description:

【Telemann's grand festive music, which resounded in Frankfurt in 1716, is revived!】 After the end of the War of the Spanish Succession in 1714, the Habsburg dynasty grappled with the troublesome issue of succession, which threatened to become a new source of conflict. On April 13, 1716, the long-awaited heir was born: Leopold, the first child of Emperor Charles VI and Elisabeth Christine. This strengthened the Habsburgs' power base and was seen as guaranteeing political stability and peace across Europe. Celebratory events were held throughout the empire. In Frankfurt am Main (the city's official name), which was also the imperial free city where the emperor's election and coronation took place that same year, the city's music director, Telemann, played a major role not only in composing the festive music but also in planning the entire event, including the day's performances. Believing that Frankfurt's own orchestra alone could not perform such a large-scale work, Telemann invited skilled musicians from the renowned court orchestra of Darmstadt. The centerpiece of this festive music consists of technically demanding pieces, likely written for these virtuosos and renowned singers. The festive music is in two parts.First, the church music piece "Christian Nation! Celebrate the Feast of Joy" was performed in the church during the morning. That same evening, the serenade "Germany is Green and Blooming in Peace" was performed in the city center at Römerberg Square. Both were large-scale works featuring orchestra, choir, and soloists, perfectly suited to grandly celebrate the birth of the successor to the Holy Roman Empire. "Christian Nation! Celebrate the Feast of Joy" is in two parts, employing five soloists alongside oboe, flute, and violin as solo instruments. In the magnificent Sixth Aria, a solo trumpet accentuates the heroic atmosphere. Trumpets and timpani resound with particular power in the second part, where the Ode to Joy is layered multiple times. In the final choral movement, the opening choral fugue is revisited, bringing the music to a magnificent close that forms a perfect circle. (1/2) Naxos Japan
