Description:
Alan Hovhaness, a composer of Armenian and Scottish descent, is known for his contemplative style influenced by Eastern music and ancient religious music. He was an organist at the Armenian Church during the Great Depression and considered the organ an ideal medium of expression, but only performed publicly for a decade, beginning in 1938. This album contains all of his works for organ: "Sonata No. 1," in five movements with a characteristic rhythmic pattern; "St. Gregory's Prayer" with trumpet; Sonata No. 2, "The Invisible Sun," inspired by Andrew Jackson Davis's mystical thoughts; and "The Birdsong," inspired by the singing of birds. The third sonata, "Chairokotsugumi," was inspired by the singing of birds, and other works delve deeply into religious and cultural themes, including "Habakkuk," based on the Old Testament, and "Sanayin (Partita)," dedicated to the remains of an ancient church in Armenia.
