Description:
This is a recording of a performance of Lully's "Pastoral of Peace," originally presented at the Boston Music Festival in 2022, which was also performed in Bremen in 2024. Lully's "Pastoral of Peace" is a divertissement performed by the Marquis de Seignelay at the celebration of the end of the War of Reunification between France and Spain, which ended with the Peace of Regensburg, signed on August 15, 1685. Written by Jean Racine, this musical drama praises the king for bringing the war to a victorious end and bringing peace. The celebration, which cost a great deal of money, was a grand affair, and Louis XIV is said to have praised it. Charpentier's "Festival de la Rueil" is a musical drama commissioned by the Marquis de Richelieu (great-nephew of the famous Richelieu, who served as Louis XIII's Prime Minister) to compete with the above celebration of Seignelay, which was planned by his rival. Along with the musical drama, Richelieu planned to organize a celebration of the unveiling of a statue of the king's cavalier.The meticulous planning of the festival was documented, and the celebration, which was to have surpassed even the celebration of Seignelay, was aborted for a variety of reasons and never came to fruition. The Boston Festival of Ancient Music Vocal & Chamber Ensembles (Orchestra) has been active in the United States and Europe for many years as the orchestra of the Boston Festival of Ancient Music, a music festival that began in 1980 in Boston, USA. The orchestra's musical directors are Paul O'Dette and Stephen Stubbs, two of the greatest exponents of string repellent instruments, and its concertmaster is Robert Mealy, an American baroque violinist who has played in the Tafelmusik and other festivals. The orchestra is also highly regarded for its performances of French Baroque dramatic music, and has released numerous recordings of Lully and Charpentier's dramatic music on the cpo label. Here, too, Odette and Stubbs are joined by their own theorbo and baroque guitars, and they provide the bass continuo to enhance the singing of the accomplished singers.
