Description:
This album contains three modern and contemporary Italian choral works. Pizzetti's "Requiem" was written in 1922. It was his first large-scale choral work, and Pizzetti's grief over the loss of his wife in 1920 is said to have inspired its composition. With its complex counterpoint and effective use of the Gregorian chant "Day of Wrath," it is sometimes performed by 12 solo singers, but on this album it was sung by a mixed chorus. Margutti's "Missa Lorca" was written between 2002 and 2006 using poems by the great Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca. The combination of Lorca's poem and the melody of Monteverdi's Mass "llo tempore then Jesus" is used to great effect. Donati's "Sicut Cervus Like a Deer Seeking Water in a Valley River" is another work that uses musical material from the past and, as the title suggests, has understated allusions to Palestrina's motet, with 16 voices singing complex polyphony and a rich sound world. Performed by the Turin-based Erato Choir, founded in 2018 by Dario Vecchi and Massimo Lombarti.He has performed with orchestras and conductors in Italy and all over Europe to high acclaim.
