Menotti's opera "Amahl and the Night Visitors," along with the ballet "The Nutcracker" and the opera "Hansel and Gretel," became a staple of Christmas theater for children and their families, especially in the United States and Europe. This film is a recording of a performance staged at the Theater an der Wien in December 2022 under the direction of Stefan Hareheim, who was appointed artistic director of the Theater an der Wien for the 2022/23 season.The lead role of Amahl, a spirited boy, is played by boy soprano Tenpu Ishijima (a member of the Vienna Boys Choir), and Amahl's mother is played by mezzo-soprano Chamilia Kaiser, who is well known for her theatrical roles. Conductor Magnus Rodgaard, a native of Norway and a fellow countryman of Hareheim, will lead the ensemble of singers, dance team, choir, and orchestra in a lively production of this heartwarming Christmas Eve tale.
