Description:
World premiere recording of "The Last Warrior" by Finnish composer Krusell, well-known for his clarinet works! Born in Finland, the son of a bookbinder, Krusell showed his talent from an early age. After studying composition under G.J. Vogler, Krusell wrote many works for clarinet, among them a concerto that ranks with Mozart as one of the most important works for this instrument in the repertoire. This album contains three works from Krusell's last years, including "The Last Warrior" for recitation, chorus, and orchestra, recorded for the first time in the world. The Last Warrior" was inspired by a poem by the Swedish poet and critic Erik Gustav Jäger (1783-1847). It is a large-scale work written to honor the ancient hero Odin and idolize the Vikings, and was premiered at the Stockholm Opera House on December 9, 1837, the year before the composer's death, to mixed reviews and was never performed again. The Little Slave Girl is Krusell's only opera. The overture, too, has a heavy atmosphere at the beginning, but soon reveals a bright and clear melody. The Bassoon Concerto is Krusell's last instrumental work, and was written for his daughter-in-law, bassoonist France Ploimeyer, who had a range of three and a half octaves. The melody of Boieldieu's opera "The New Lord of the Village," which was performed in Stockholm for the first time in 40 years at the time, is quoted in the piece. Ploimeijer was a player in the court orchestra and often played in ensembles with his colleagues, and Krusell wrote many works for them. The Helsinki Baroque Orchestra, conducted by Aapo Hakkinen, uses period instruments to shed light on these unknown works. Naxos Japan
