Orphee in Hell (Heaven and Hell)" is Offenbach's first successful operetta, a parody of Gluck's "Orfeo and Euridice," which was popular at the time. Although the operetta was based on a myth, it contained sharp social satire and became very popular, it also generated a lot of criticism and caused a firestorm of public opinion. Offenbach, who was aware of the controversy, made several revisions to the work, which is known to have added fuel to the fire of controversy. This album contains orchestral and ballet pieces, among which "Neptune's Palace" was recently discovered. Griffiths, who specializes in orchestral pieces, and the Deutsches Symphonieorchester Berlin give a fascinating performance, including this unknown piece, which was carefully stored away in an old archive.
