Akram Khan’s production of *Giselle* (premiered in 2016; winner of the 2017 Laurence Olivier Award), which boldly reimagines the original world of this classic ballet and blazed new trails for the English National Ballet under the direction of Tamara Rojo. Set to a modern score by Vincenzo Lamagna—designed specifically for this production and interspersed with references to Adan’s original music—this is an entirely new “Giselle,” in which the conflict between the working class and the ruling class, along with the raw scandals of the real world and the absurdities of the otherworld, are distorted and reimagined. Act I is set in a garment factory, home to a community of immigrants rejected by mainstream society. The schemes of the ruling class intertwine with the love and hatred between Giselle, Albrecht, and Hilarion. In Act II, set amid the ruins of the factory, the female workers who died after years of grueling labor become Wilis; they summon Giselle’s spirit, brutally murder Hilarion, and even lay hands on Albrecht. The story’s themes of love, hatred, revenge, and forgiveness pose even sharper questions for us today. Rina Kanahara, a promising rising star, also appears as a member of the community. Naxos Japan
