This masterpiece of Japanese jazz—a fusion of Japan’s unique artistic vision and recording technology—is now available on cassette tape for the first time. At a time when Japanese jazz was absorbing influences from America and Europe while searching for its own identity, Jiro Inagaki set his sights on the “groove.” A glimpse of this can be seen in his previous album, *In the Groove*, which attempted to fuse jazz-rock and funk. However, on this album, *Funky Stuff*, that jet-black groove—combining elasticity and tenacity—has finally reached its pinnacle. The album features “Painted Paradise,” where the finger-picked bass in the intro creates a tight groove; “Breeze,” which shines with a mellow arrangement by Hiromasa Suzuki (aka Korugen); and the title track “Funky Stuff,” a unique interpretation of a Cool & the Gang song. Furthermore, the recording techniques are an essential part of this album’s appeal. A uniquely Japanese recording aesthetic was achieved through close-miking, thorough sound absorption, and aggressive compression.
