A recording of Debussy’s “Pelléas et Mélisande” performed on period instruments—something almost no one would have imagined—is now available. And with the exceptional ensemble of Loto and Les Siècles, it’s safe to say this release will cause an even greater sensation than the release of the Stravinsky “Rite of Spring” album. Although the vocal parts in “Pelléas et Mélisande” consist entirely of recitative shaped by French intonation, the cast—led by soprano Vannina Santoni (born in 1987) as Mélisande—is composed entirely of native French-speaking singers, resulting in a performance that is both natural and utterly beautiful. In particular, the masterful performance by baritone Alexandre Duamel as Golaud shines. Also noteworthy is the orchestral sound created by Rotto and Les Siècles. Without resorting to gimmicks, it remains strictly simple—even chamber-like—faithfully realizing Debussy’s exquisite orchestration. With the exception of the strings, all instruments are French-made from around 1900 (details are listed in the booklet); the bright, transparent timbre and the infinite softness produced by the gut-stringed instruments are particularly captivating. Because the playing is essentially non-vibrato, it even creates a sound reminiscent of Japanese gagaku. According to Roto, this performance is the first to truly bring to life the reason Debussy used trombones in the underground scene—to create a mysterious timbre by resonating with the strings of the double bass. While “Pelléas et Mélisande” has been gaining attention in Japan recently, this performance—by the original creators themselves—is sure to capture the world’s attention. It truly allows listeners to experience the beauty and grandeur of the piece for the first time.
