A Young Quartet's New Take on Nordic Folk MusicFounded in 2002 and known as one of the most exciting young string quartets as of 2018, the Danish String Quartet brings a new perspective to contemporary music and the core classical repertoire, highlighting its essence. At the same time, they also engage the world of Nordic folk music in surprising and stunning ways: their 2014 album Wood Works (Da Capo Records) was a hit in Leftfield, and their concert performances have captivated audiences around the world. Now the Danish Quartet has chosen their folk music project for a new recording with ECM. Now found is the fairest of roses" is taken from a hymn published in 1732 by the Danish theologian and poet H.A. Browasson. The hymn is a mysterious, dark melody. To accompany his Christmas hymn, Browerson chose an old Lutheran funeral chorus. It elegantly demonstrates that life and death are always connected. They speak as follows.'We are on a journey through the melodies of Scandinavian folk music and we will end up in Broasson. It is a journey that may have many steep paths, but we believe we will return with some wonderful memories. In these old melodies we find infinite beauty and depth, and we cannot help but sing them through the medium of our quartet. Blowerson found the prettiest roses, and we found wonderful tunes.
