EXUMA, the Bahamian-born folk musician active in New York, also known as TONY MCKAY or MACFARLANE GREGORY ANTHONY MACKEY, moved to New York's Greenwich Village at age 17 in the early 60s to study architecture, but soon ran out of money and his plans stalled. He began playing guitar and singing in the burgeoning folk-rock scene in the area, where he was discovered by producer BOB WYLD, who was also the manager of the BLUES MAGOOS. Adopting the name "EXUMA, THE OBEAH MAN," he made his debut. As a Loft Classic, the ambient dance track "EXUMA, THE OBEAH MAN" that even DAVID MANCUSO played, the hypnotic, beautiful tune "DAMBALA" that lures you into a deep spiritual world, the zombie psychedelic hippie dancer "MAMA LOI, PAPA LOI," and more. These seven tracks are packed with a unique fusion of traditional Bahamian folk songs born from homesickness, infectious beats from Junk Canoe parades, ring play, mythology, linguistic idioms, folk, rock, carnival, calypso, reggae, African music, and voodoo styles. Featuring full participation from BLUES MAGOOS lead singer PEPPY CASTRO and BOB WYLD under the name DADDY YA YA. This is a uniquely freaking folk album that could be considered the true origin of the lo-fi fringe rock boom, often thought to have started with SUN CITY GIRLS/SUBLIME FREQUENCIES.
