To celebrate the 90th anniversary of Pierre Boulez’s birth (March 26, 1925), this collection brings together, for the first time in history, all of Boulez’s recordings for Columbia and Sony Classical in a 67-CD set. To commemorate the 90th birthday of Pierre Boulez—a leading French composer, conductor, and musicologist, and a true giant of the classical music world—we are releasing a 67-CD box set that brings together all of Boulez’s recordings made between 1966 and 1988 for for Columbia, CBS, and Sony Classical have been compiled into a 67-CD box set. Boulez, who began his career as a composer, made his full-fledged conducting debut in 1958 in Baden-Baden, Germany. After learning of his subsequent success in Europe, the maestro George Szell invited him to make his American debut conducting the Cleveland Orchestra in 1965. From 1967 to 1972, he served as the orchestra’s principal guest conductor and music advisor, assisting the ailing George Szell. Following Szell’s death, he supported the orchestra and served as a bridge to the next music director, Lorin Maazel. In 1971, he was simultaneously appointed Principal Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Music Director of the New York Philharmonic, succeeding Bernstein, thereby establishing his status as one of the preeminent conductors of the 20th century in both name and reality.
