Nelsons and the Vienna Philharmonic Perform Symphony No. 6 Live from the 2020 Salzburg Festival Andris Nelsons and the Vienna Philharmonic’s performances of Mahler’s works have evolved into a full-scale Mahler cycle, beginning with Symphony No. 2, “Resurrection,” at the 2018 Salzburg Festival. Since then, they have performed Symphony No. 6 in 2020, Symphony No. 3 in 2021, Symphony No. 5 in 2022, Symphony No. 4 in 2023, Symphony No. 9 in 2024, and Symphony No. 10 “Adagio” in 2025—all performed at the Salzburg Festival. In addition, Symphony No. 7 was performed at the Vienna Musikverein in 2023. Centered on the Salzburg Festival, Nelsons and the Vienna Philharmonic have systematically performed Mahler’s symphonies at a pace of nearly one per year, building a major project by also documenting these performances on video. Furthermore, as part of the ongoing project, Symphony No. 1, “Titan,” was performed at the Vienna Musikverein in February 2026, followed by Symphony No. 3 at the Vienna Musikverein and Symphony No. 8, “Symphony of a Thousand,” at the Vienna Konzerthaus in May of the same year. Given this progress, it is safe to say that this Mahler cycle is finally approaching its final stage toward the completion of the complete video collection. The release features a concert recording of Mahler’s “Symphony No. 6,” filmed at the 2020 Salzburg Festival as part of this project. Mahler’s Symphony No. 6 is a masterpiece of the highest order, also known by its programmatic title, “Tragic.” Nelsons vividly brings out the tension and lyricism inherent in this work, making full use of the Vienna Philharmonic’s exquisite ensemble playing. Not only is the overwhelming power of the “hammer blow” in the final movement striking, but the beautiful, delicate melodies that appear throughout the piece also possess a profound sense of conviction. Focusing on the work’s core theme—the confrontation with fate—this is a deeply fulfilling performance of Mahler that is uniquely their own. CMAJOR
