Crystaline - Karen Tanaka's Shimmering World of SoundKaren Tanaka was born in Tokyo, Japan. She dropped out of the Department of French Literature at Aoyama Gakuin University and studied composition with Akira Miyoshi at Toho Gakuen School of Music. In 1986, Karen Tanaka went to Paris on a scholarship from the French government to study composition under Tristan Murail and as a researcher at IRCAM. At the end of this period, he was commissioned by the Ultima Festival in Oslo to compose "Hommage en crystals" for the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra. She currently resides in Santa Barbara, California, and her works are presented in a variety of genres. Karen Tanaka's music is "beautifully crafted with skillful technique, her music is sensitive and emotive.She is said to have "an exquisite ear that can capture the organic whole along with the details" (from the New Grove World Music Encyclopedia). This album is a collection of some of Karen Tanaka's best-known piano compositions. Signe Backe is a pianist active in Norwegian music circles with a wide repertoire ranging from Baroque to today's music, having studied with Jan-Henrik Kayssel at the Bergen Conservatory (now the Grieg Academy at the University of Bergen) and Jens Harald Bratli at the Norwegian National Academy of Music. Water Dance" is a three-movement piece commissioned by Backe. As the album title "Karen Tanaka's Sparkling World of Sound" suggests, the sensibility and skill of the Scandinavian pianist adds a new dimension of sound to Karen Tanaka's world. King International
