British composer Jonathan Dove (1959-), who made his breakthrough with "Flight" (1998), a work commissioned by the Glyndebourne Festival, is a sought-after composer, especially for choral, vocal, and operatic works. Commissioned by the Sacconi String Quartet, "In Damascus" is a work about the Syrian Civil War, and the text is an English translation of a prose poem by Ali Safar, a poet and writer from the country.
