Description:

Artform Revisited" is the latest album by legendary drummer Lewis Hayes, 87 years old and active at the forefront of jazz, completed just one year after his last album! Artform Revisited" is the latest album by legendary drummer Lewis Hayes, who at 87 years of age is still at the forefront of jazz, and is now available on Savant Records. Born in Detroit, Hayes arrived in New York City in 1956 to join the Horace Silver Quintet, and in 1959 he joined the Cannonball Adderley Band, placing him in the heart of the jazz world in his early 20s.He also recorded with John Coltrane, and over the next 60 years, Hayes has accumulated an impressive body of fine work with Oscar Peterson, Dexter Gordon, Grant Green, Kenny Burrell, Sonny Rollins, and many other giants of contemporary music. His latest album, Artform Revisited, is one that was conceived immediately after the recording of his last album, "Actually Right," released in 2023, and is the very embodiment of "living history." While it may fondly recall Lewis Hayes' old friends, it is a work that stands at the pinnacle of today's post-bebop sessions.Surrounded by a select group of members including Abraham Burton (tenor saxophone), Steve Nelson (vibraphone), David Hazeltine (piano), and Deslon Douglas (bass), Hayes' lively and colorful drumming supported a carefully selected set list. The setlist was well supported. The album opens with Dizzy Gillespie's "Tour de Force," followed by Charlie Parker's "My Little Suede Shoes," John Lewis' version of "Milestones," and other classic tunes, all expertly crafted by Hayes. The fourth track, Bobby Troup's beautiful ballad "You're Looking at Me," is a tribute to Nat King Cole, whom Hayes has always loved to listen to and been inspired by. And two new Hayes songs, "Ruby" and the bluesy "G," are featured. The new song "G" was written and inspired by a blues number by Red Garland that came on while he was listening to the radio in the car with bassist Desron on the way to rehearsal. The album was named "Artform Revisited" because they wanted to pay tribute to the musicians and music that influenced Hayes and left them with high standards. With this album, Hayes proves himself not only a great drummer, but also a talented and charismatic leader, inspiring his players to give their best, and delivering performances born of his vast experience and the mutual respect of all involved.
