From ChallengeClassics in the Netherlands comes a collection of C.P.E. Bach sonatas performed by Tini Matheu, Ton Koopman’s long-time partner, and Reine-Marie Verhaeghen, a member of the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra! This project can be seen as a spiritual sequel to the duo’s previous recording of J.S. Bach’s “Trio Sonatas” (CC72314), and it offers a fascinating exploration of the musical language as it evolved across generations from father to son. Written at a time when Baroque tradition and Classical innovation intersected, these sonatas are masterpieces representative of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s unique “Empfindsamer Stil” (Sensitive Style). Many of the sonatas for flute (wind instrument) and keyboard included in this album were originally composed as trio sonatas and later adapted by C.P.E. Bach himself; they mark a transition to a “modern” style in which the right-hand keyboard part carries an independent melody and interacts with the wind instrument on a completely equal footing. Of particular note is Verhaegen’s approach. While these works are typically performed on the traverso (transverse flute) due to the tastes of the Prussian court, and are conventionally transposed up a minor third when played on the recorder, this recording adopts the daring approach of performing them “in the original key.” By switching between three types of recorders and skillfully manipulating register transitions and articulation, she masterfully recreates the dynamics characteristic of the traverso on the recorder. In Wq.85, she even performs an original cadenza based on examples by C.P.E. Bach. This album, a culmination of historical insight and rich musicality, is a must-listen for fans of early music and the recorder. Tini Matheu is a Dutch harpsichord and fortepiano player. In addition to serving as producer on numerous recordings by the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, led by her husband Ton Koopman, she regularly performs as a soloist with the ensemble. She has also collaborated with Verhaeghen for many years as a founding member of the “Corelli Ensemble.” Dutch recorder player Reine-Marie Verhaegen has been a long-standing member of the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra. She performs a wide range of repertoire, from 17th-century music to contemporary works, and specializes in pieces by Steve Reich and Japanese composers. Tokyo M-Plus
