Like Miles, he uses his trumpet to emit the most moving human cries." - Avichai Cohen, who won the hearts of listeners with his performance on The New York Times2014 release of Mark Turner's "Lathe of Heaven," also visited Japan for TOKYO JAZZ in 2015 and many were captivated by his stunning performance. This album consists entirely of originals by Avichai, all vast and impressionistic pieces for jazz quartet (trumpet, piano, bass, and drums). (Tenor saxophone is also included on a few tracks.) It is dedicated to the memory of Avishai's father, David, and depicts his last days with grace and limitation. Avishai's gently muted trumpet sets the emotional tone of the overall music in the album's first moments, but together the talented musicians deepen their musical exploration and develop a more impressionistic world. Israeli pianist Yonathan Avishai, who has played with Cohen in various bands as well as solo, actively participates in Cohen's unforgettable songs, sometimes using blues phrases to make the songs shine even brighter. Cohen and drummer Nasheet Waits understand each other like a true friend, interacting with each other moment by moment, reminiscent of Miles and Tony Williams in their heyday, or Don Cherry and Billy Higgins, but with the added bonus that it is the music of our time. Eric Revis, bassist for the Branford Marsalis Quartet for 20 years, provides excellent and polished support throughout the album. Saxophonist Bill McHenry, a very dexterous modernist who has played with Paul Motian and Andrew Cyrille, is as emotionally expressive as the shadows of Cohen's playing.This work was recorded in July 2015 at Studios La Buissonne in the south of France, preduced by Manfred Eicher.
