Brooklyn, New York-based singer/songwriter Aruj Aftab, who made headlines when he was nominated for Best New Artist and won the award for Best Global Music Performance at the 64th Grammy Awards, has finally released his solo debut album on Verve. His 2021 indie release, "Vulture Prince," garnered a great deal of attention when Pitchfork described Aruj's powerful voice as "filled with a sadness so deep it seeps into your bones. The album was instrumental in a cultural shift, moving traditional South Asian music into the larger field of contemporary music. Vulture Prince" was highly acclaimed by Elvis Costello and former President Barack Obama, and won a Grammy Award, making Arj the first Pakistani artist to win a Grammy Award. The following year, "Vulture Prince Deluxe Edition" was released on Verve, and "Udhero Na" featuring Anoushka Shankar was nominated for the 65th Grammy Awards for Best Global Music Performance for the second year in a row. In 2023, he also released the trio album "Love In Exile" with Vijay Iyer and Shahzad Ismaili.The album was nominated for two Grammy Awards at the 66th Grammy Awards, for Best Alternative Jazz Album and Best Global Music Performance. Finally, her debut solo release on Verve, "Night Reign," is a remarkable debut. An ode to the night, the source of her inspiration, Night Reign is the latest "Brooklyn Sound," a vivid reflection of the creative community she has nurtured in her hometown of Brooklyn, New York.
