Elgar’s Masterpiece, *The Dream of Gerontius* Gardner, a leading authority on British music, assembled a stellar cast for this BBC Proms Live! *The Dream of Gerontius*, which Elgar himself inscribed in the autograph score as “the best of me.” This 1900 work, *The Dream of Gerontius*, solidified the success Elgar had achieved with his *Enigma Variations* in 1899. This recording was made live at the Royal Albert Hall during the 2022 BBC Proms. It is a renowned performance that *The Guardian* described as “a performance guided by perfect judgment.” Based on the poetry of Cardinal John Henry Newman, *The Dream of Gerontius* depicts the spiritual journey of a man on his deathbed as he faces God’s judgment after death and is led to Purgatory; it serves as a deeply Catholic meditation on death, judgment, and the afterlife. Rather than a traditional oratorio, it can be described as a beautiful and mystical spiritual journey depicting the transformation of the soul. Elgar himself said of this work, “I wrote this from the very depths of my being.” American mezzo-soprano Jamie Burton takes on the role of the Angel, facing off against British tenor Alan Clayton in the title role. British bass James Pratt co-stars as the “Tormented Priest/Angel.” Under the baton of Gardner, Chief Conductor of the LPO and a leading authority on British music, the performance features compelling vocal and orchestral performances. Combined with the excitement of a live performance, this recording brings out the essence of the work even more vividly. LPO
