Description:

The world’s first CD release of this evocative, masterful performance—a beautiful fusion of the “good old days” performance traditions of Vienna and Berlin! These recordings were made in 1968 when Deutsche Grammophon undertook the “Complete Brahms Chamber Music” project (a 15-LP set). For this collection, the violin and cello sonatas were performed by the French musicians Ferras and Fournier, string quartets, quintets, and sextets by the British Amadeus Quartet, and piano trios by the Italian Trieste Trio—a lineup consisting, for some reason, almost entirely of non-German musicians. However, this piano quartet was recorded by German-Austrian musicians. Pianist Deems (b. 1928), a native of Vienna, is a performer who best carries on the musical tradition of the “City of Music.” Violinist Drolz (1919–1973) was the first violinist of the Berlin Philharmonic and was known for his warm, romantic, and lyrical playing. Drolz formed the Drolz Quartet in 1950; Passaggio on viola and Donderer on cello were members at the time in 1968. The chamber music performances by Deems and Droltz are grounded in the tradition of domestic music dating back to the 19th century and possess a charm that seems to speak intimately to the listener. When Deutsche Grammophon released its “Complete Brahms” series in 1983, it re-recorded the piano quartets with Brandis (b. 1935) and others—a generation younger than Drolz. The stylistic differences between the lyrical Drolts and the refined Brandis are clear, and it seems this was precisely the intention behind Deutsche Grammophon’s re-recording. Having long been out of print due to its reputation as a performance in the old style, this Drolts recording is now being released on CD for the first time worldwide. Precisely because various styles coexist today, the revival of Drolts’ lyrical performance is particularly meaningful. Note that while in Germany only No. 2 was sold separately, in Japan all three pieces were popularly released as a single LP. The cover art for this release is based on that Japanese LP.
