Description:
The complete piano works of Louis Vierne, known for his majestic organ works. In this second volume of the series, we hear a variety of pieces centering on the "12 Preludes," which Vierne began composing in 1914, at the outbreak of World War I. Each of the "12 Preludes" has a symbolic title, and many of them are romantic in nature. Each of the "12 Preludes" has a symbolic title, and most of them are romantic, but many of the titles are pessimistic and the tone is dark, reflecting his mental and physical exhaustion from the increasingly violent wartime situation and the treatment he received for glaucoma, which was worsening at the time. The next piece, "Solitude," was written in 1918. It is impressive for its sad tone, which expresses his despair at the loss of his brother, René, an organist, and his eldest son, Jacques, in the war. Other pieces include the posthumously published "Pieces for Piano, Op. 49," titled "Zarathustra Speaks," and the nostalgic "Yale for Dancing.
