Description:
A new opera by the ensemble Music of Remembrance, founded in 1998 to promote the existence of Holocaust victims by actively performing a series of works that have been called "decadent music." Chipro's opera "Farewell" premiered at Seattle's Benaroya Hall on May 19, 2019. Cipro's previous work, "After Life," was awarded a prize by the American Opera Association for its portrayal of the soulful encounter between Pablo Picasso and Gertrude Stein in the modern era. The story of "Farewell" is also based on a poem by Radnóti, a Hungarian poet who lost his life in the Holocaust. After his death, his notebooks containing his harrowing experiences were discovered, and they convey the horror of war to the public. The story is about Radnoti (Miklós), who is ready to die, and shares his last night with his wife. Their understanding that life is given to create something beloved and beautiful is depicted with ever-changing music. Without hope or despair, the mystical music spun by the couple and the "angel of death" brings quiet emotion to the listener. Naxos Japan
