A rich oratorio that is not only a mixture of old and new styles unique to the transitional period: ......! The composer Gasparini, who lived at about the same time as the late Baroque master A. Scarlatti and had a productive career in Rome and Venice, has been quietly but steadily re-evaluated in recent decades. The reevaluation of Gasparini has been quietly but steadily progressing over the past few decades, and the appeal of the numerous religious music dramas (oratorios) he composed in Rome before his rise to prominence in the Venetian opera world is increasingly being illuminated. This recording of the complete works of "Athalia" made by the young French talents gathered in Versailles is a masterful performance filled with the results of recent research. Based on the play "Athalia" published by the great Racine in 1691 under the reign of Louis XIV, the Sun King of France, who had established supremacy in western Europe, this work was performed in Rome in 1692, the home of the papacy, which was becoming increasingly pro-French. It also incorporates the concerto style that Stradella had begun experimenting with a short time before, and is notable for its new techniques. The story is full of ups and downs as the high priest and the nanny, who have served the royal family since their extermination by the barbaric tyrant Athalia, seek revenge with the general Ormano.The five singers, including Camille Pulle, who is making great strides in a wide range of repertoire from baroque to contemporary, also sing in the chorus, and their singing is full and rich.
