Brazilian composer Almeida Prado, who became a pupil of female composer Dinorah de Carvalho at the age of 14 and later studied composition with Camargo Guarnieri, eventually became interested in the works of Stockhausen, Boulez, and Ligeti and received a scholarship to study in Paris. Influenced by the mysticism of Messiaen as well as by the teachings of Nadia Boulanger, he combined the essence of these works with the Brazilian music of his own country and established his own style, as seen in piano collections such as "Cartas Celestes = Celestial Charts (GP709, 710, 746, 747)". The "Nocturnes" were composed between 1985 and 1991, and they emphasize a lyrical atmosphere rather than the boldness of the "Cartas Celestes," paying homage to his teacher, Messiaen, with a delicacy reminiscent of Chopin and Scriabin, and also using bossa nova-like rhythms. The music is also influenced by Chopin, Scriabin, and other composers. ILHAS ISLANDS" is a precursor to "Cartas Celestes" and is unified by its mystical style.
