Asmik Grigorian Makes Her Covent Garden Debut in *Jenůfa*! The story is set in a remote village in Moravia at the end of the 19th century. Jenůfa, the village’s most beautiful woman, lives with her devout stepmother Kostelnicka and is courted by two half-brothers from the Brija family, who run a mill: the playboy Števa and the earnest Láza. When Jenůfa begins to show interest in Števa, a jealous Láča confronts her and, in a fit of rage, inadvertently cuts her cheek with a knife. Some time later, her stepmother Kostelnicka tells Jenůfa that the child she secretly gave birth to—Števa’s son—has died… *Jenůfa*, composed as Janáček’s third opera, premiered in Brno in 1904. Based on a play by Gabriela Praisová that depicts the tragedies arising from the insular village society and interpersonal relationships of Moravia, Janáček wrote the libretto—making full use of the sounds and intonations of the Moravian dialect (a dialect of Czech)—and composed the music; it is known as one of his most representative operas. Asmik Grigorian (as Jenůfa), who has made a name for herself in recent years at the Salzburg Festival and the Bayreuth Festival, makes her Covent Garden debut in this production. The role of Kostelnicka, the stepmother who could be called the hidden protagonist, is played by the highly seasoned veteran Karita Mattila. The brothers of the Bríja family are portrayed by Saimir Pirgu, whose beautiful voice and stage presence have made him a sought-after artist at opera houses around the world, as Števa, and Nicky Spence, who won the 2020 Gramophone Award (Solo Vocal) for his performance in Janáček’s *The Diary of One Who Disappeared*, plays the role of Láza—a truly stellar cast. Klaus Guth’s direction brings the characters’ psychological conflicts and sense of stifling despair to life on stage, while the talented Hungarian conductor Henrik Nanasi weaves Janáček’s music—with its crisp rhythms and rich emotional depth—into a colorful tapestry.
