Description:
Gheorghe Enescu, a 20th-century Romanian composer. He displayed musical talent from an early age and, beginning in his teens, performed as a violinist and conductor. In addition, at the Vienna Conservatory—where he enrolled at the age of seven—he studied under Josef Hermesberger, Robert Fuchs at the Vienna Conservatory, where he enrolled at the age of seven; he later studied composition with Massenet and Fauré at the Paris Conservatory, gaining a broad education in harmony, counterpoint, and early music, and was recognized as a composer from an early age. Although he composed many works, including symphonies and chamber music, only an unfinished violin concerto survives. Nevertheless, the draft—spanning 600 measures across two movements—boasts a level of craftsmanship that is astonishing in and of itself. The first movement, which begins with a long orchestral exposition (90 measures) reminiscent of Brahms and Beethoven, features three themes, each of which leaves a vivid impression that lingers in the listener’s mind after just one hearing. The second movement also features a beautiful, dreamlike theme. The magnificent performance by soloist Caroline Wittmann is a highlight. The Fantasia for Piano and Orchestra is a work that combines Brahms-like solemnity with Liszt’s virtuosity. Since it lacks a cadenza section, it is presumed to have been conceived not as a movement of a concerto but as a standalone work. Although neither piece has been published, a group led by conductor Ruzicka gathered scattered materials and managed to bring these works to the stage. Please enjoy these unknown works by Enescu.
